European Christmas markets are magical. Picture twinkling lights, charming wooden stalls, steaming mugs of mulled wine, beautiful handmade ornaments, and festive music filling the streets.
But there's one thing you might not think about when planning your trip: you're going to spend a LOT of time outside in the cold!
Between wandering through market stalls, standing in line for holiday treats, exploring historic towns, and admiring the Christmas lights after dark, you could spend hours outdoors each day.
And while we all picture snow-covered villages, European winters can also mean freezing rain, wind, and damp conditions.
The good news? You don't need to pack an enormous suitcase to stay comfortable.
The secret is choosing warm layers, comfortable footwear, and a few practical travel accessories.
I've put together my favorite winter travel essentials, including options for different budgets, so you can spend more time enjoying the
Christmas magic and less time worrying about cold feet.

1. A Warm Winter Coat
A good winter coat is probably the most important thing you'll pack.
I recommend a longer puffer jacket that covers your hips and thighs. That extra coverage makes a difference when you're standing outside browsing stalls or enjoying holiday festivities.
Look for insulation, a hood, wind protection, and ideally some water resistance.
My Winter Coat Picks
MOERDENG Women's Waterproof Long Winter Coat
A long winter coat with a hood and extended coverage, designed for colder weather. A practical style to consider when you want extra protection from winter conditions.
PUFFIT Women's Long Puffer Jacket
A thickened, insulated winter puffer with a longer design that helps keep more of your body covered.
Outdoor Ventures Women's Long Hooded Lightweight Jacket
A lighter long puffer option for travelers who want warmth without the bulk of a traditional heavy winter coat. Particularly appealing for travelers trying to pack light.
Packing tip: Wear your bulkiest coat on the plane rather than packing it in your suitcase.

2. Fleece-Lined Pants
If you've ever spent hours walking outside in regular jeans during winter, you know how cold your legs can get.
Fleece-lined pants are one of my favorite recommendations for Christmas markets because they provide extra warmth without requiring bulky snow pants. They're especially practical for long sightseeing days.
My Fleece-Lined Pants Picks
baleaf Women's Fleece-Lined Water-Resistant Pants
A practical choice for cold sightseeing days, combining a warm fleece interior with water-resistant fabric.
baleaf Women's Fleece-Lined Joggers with Zipper Pockets
A comfortable, casual option for travelers who prefer joggers. The zipper pockets are especially useful when walking through crowded tourist areas.
baleaf Women's Fleece-Lined Thermal Leggings
A warm, flexible option for travelers who prefer leggings instead of traditional pants.
For Men:
• baleaf Men's Fleece-Lined Running Pants
• baleaf Men's Fleece-Lined Winter Athletic Joggers
Packing tip: Two or three pairs of versatile pants are usually enough for a weeklong trip, depending on your activities and laundry plans.

3. Lightweight, Comfortable Winter Boots or Waterproof Shoes
If there's one thing I wouldn't compromise on for a Christmas market trip, it's comfortable footwear.
You'll likely walk several miles a day, often on cobblestone streets, uneven pavement, and potentially wet or slippery surfaces.
Your boots should be comfortable, provide good traction, and protect your feet from cold and moisture.
And here's something important: You don't necessarily need enormous, heavy snow boots!
Depending on your destination and the weather, a lighter winter boot may be more practical, especially if you're traveling with carry-on luggage.
My Winter Boot Picks
WYGRQBN Women's Waterproof Winter Snow Boots
These are the black ankle-height winter boots with the gray faux-fur cuff and decorative pom-pom detail featured in my Amazon collection.
They're advertised as waterproof, warm, and non-slip, with insulated construction and a relatively compact design.
A budget-friendly option to consider if you want winter boots without spending a fortune. Check the product's weight, fit, and traction details before purchasing.
Chooka Women's Delridge Waterproof Faux Fur Chelsea Boots
These offer a lower-profile Chelsea boot style with waterproof construction and faux-fur lining.
They're worth considering for milder, rainy Christmas market destinations where a bulky snow boot may be unnecessary.
Sorel Women's Tivoli IV Waterproof Boots
A more substantial insulated winter boot with waterproof construction, designed for colder conditions.
Sorel Women's Caribou Waterproof Boots
A heavier-duty option for cold, snowy weather. These are bulkier than the other choices, but may be better suited to demanding winter conditions.
Waterproof leather uppers for added protection and some of the most comfortable shoes on the market! If you want something easy to pack and comfortable, these would be a good pick.
Which Boots Should You Choose?
• Milder, rainy weather: Chooka Chelsea boots; Dansko Waterproof outdoor sneakers
• Budget-friendly winter boots: WYGRQBN snow boots
• Colder winter destinations: Sorel Tivoli IV
• Snowier winter conditions: Sorel Caribou
Remember that no boot is guaranteed to prevent slipping on ice. Check the outsole, traction, and fit before purchasing.
Packing tip: Wear your boots on the plane to save space in your luggage and break them in before your trip.

4. Merino Wool Socks and Thermal Base Layers
One of the easiest ways to stay warm without packing bulky clothing is to start with the right base layers.
Merino wool is particularly useful for winter travel because it provides insulation, helps manage moisture, and is comfortable for extended wear.

5. A Heated Vest for Extra Warmth
If you tend to get cold easily, a heated vest is worth considering.
Unlike adding another bulky sweater, a heated vest provides adjustable warmth beneath your winter coat.
That's particularly useful when you're standing around browsing market stalls rather than constantly walking.
My Pick: Heated Vest
The burngogo heated vest in my Amazon collection is advertised for men and women, with three heating levels.
It's a practical option for travelers who want adjustable warmth during long outdoor days.
Flying tip: Many heated vests use removable lithium batteries. Check your airline's battery restrictions before flying. Spare lithium batteries and power banks generally must be carried in your carry-on luggage.

9. Bags for Christmas Market Shopping and Souvenirs
One of the best parts of European Christmas markets is discovering unique holiday decorations and gifts.
You'll find beautiful handmade ornaments, wooden decorations, ceramic mugs, candles, and locally crafted souvenirs.
But there's something many travelers forget to plan for: How are you going to get everything home?
My Souvenir Packing Picks
AOZITA Wine Angel Reusable Wine Protector Bags

Add extra padding for fragile items, especially delicate glass ornaments.

10. Anti-Theft Bags and Phone Protection
Christmas markets are wonderful places to explore, but popular markets can become extremely crowded, especially during weekends and evenings. As with any busy tourist destination, it's important to protect your belongings.
I recommend keeping your phone, money, and important documents close to your body.
Travelon Anti-Theft Bags
I've included several Travelon options in my Amazon collection, they even have Sling bags for men now!
Phone Lanyards
A phone lanyard is one of my favorite travel accessories.
When you're constantly taking photos, checking maps, and navigating crowded streets, having your phone attached to you is incredibly convenient.
I've included a few options in my Amazon collection:
Bandolier Hailey Chrome Leather Crossbody Phone Case
A premium, fashionable option that keeps your phone accessible while functioning as a crossbody accessory.
Doormoon Adjustable Phone Lanyard
A more affordable option with an adjustable strap and phone attachment tabs.
A lanyard can help prevent accidental drops and discourage opportunistic grabbing, although it isn't theft-proof.
Phone Tether Anti Theft, 25.5’’ Retractable Cell Phone Lanyard
If you don't want anything around your neck, this connects to your phone with a tether.
Money Belt
VENTURE 4TH Travel Money Belt
A discreet option for storing backup cash, credit cards, and important items underneath your clothing.

A compact travel comfort accessory for longer flights.
Vewxebo Sondor Travel Seat Cushion

12. How to Pack for Christmas Markets in a Carry-On
Winter clothing can take up a lot of room, but you don't necessarily need a checked suitcase for a Christmas market vacation.
My family regularly travels with carry-on luggage, and I've learned that packing strategically is much more important than packing lots of clothing.
Here are a few tips:
Wear your bulkiest clothing on the plane. Your winter coat, boots, and heaviest sweater can save a surprising amount of suitcase space.
Stick with neutral colors. Black, gray, cream, and navy make it easy to mix and match clothing.
Pack warm layers rather than bulky outfits. Merino wool base layers and fleece-lined pants can help you stay warm without packing multiple heavy sweaters.
Use compression packing cubes. They're helpful for keeping clothing organized and making the most of limited suitcase space.
Rewear your outer layers. You don't need a different winter coat, scarf, or pair of boots every day.
Leave space for souvenirs. Those beautiful Christmas market mugs and ornaments will need somewhere to go!
